How to Write Better Prompts: 7 Simple Tricks for Smarter AI Answers

If you've ever asked an AI a question and received a generic, unhelpful answer, the issue usually isn't the AI — it's the prompt. Good prompting is a skill, and these seven tricks will level up your results immediately.

1. Give it a role

Instead of: "Write about marketing." Try: "You are an experienced digital marketing consultant. Write a 300-word guide for a small bakery owner about Instagram marketing."

Roles give the AI context, tone, and expertise to draw on.

2. Be specific about the output format

Tell the AI exactly what shape you want: a bullet list, a table, a 100-word summary, a step-by-step guide. Vague requests get vague answers.

3. Provide examples

Show one example of what "good" looks like. AI models are excellent at matching patterns — one example often beats three paragraphs of description.

4. Break big tasks into steps

Rather than asking for a complete business plan in one prompt, ask for the outline first, then expand each section. You'll get far better quality at every stage.

5. Add constraints

Word counts, audience ("explain like I'm 12"), tone ("professional but friendly"), and things to avoid ("no jargon") all sharpen the output.

6. Ask it to think step by step

For reasoning problems, add: "Think through this step by step before giving your final answer." This single sentence dramatically improves accuracy on math, logic, and analysis.

7. Iterate — don't settle

Treat the first answer as a draft. Follow up with "Make it shorter," "Give me 3 alternatives," or "Now argue the opposite view." Conversation beats one-shot prompts every time.

Quick template you can reuse

You are a [ROLE]. I need [OUTPUT TYPE] about [TOPIC] for [AUDIENCE]. Keep it [LENGTH], use a [TONE] tone, and format it as [FORMAT]. Avoid [THINGS TO AVOID].

Save this template somewhere handy — it works for emails, essays, code explanations, business ideas, and almost anything else.

Bottom line: the AI is only as good as your instructions. Spend 30 extra seconds on the prompt, and you'll save 30 minutes on the result.
